On This Day in 1990: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Debuts

The show featured a young rapper, in Will Smith, and would launch his career in a whole new path. Will would go on to become a behemoth at the box office with films like Men In Black, Independence Day, and Bad Boys but it all started with a phrase “Now, this is a story all about how…”

This would be be Will Smith’s first real acting gig, though he was reluctant to even audition due to that reason.

The show debuted on September 10, 1990 and ran six seasons for 148 episodes before ending on May 20, 1996. The show was released to syndication in 1994 and episodes can still be seen on such channels as BET, TBB, Nick at Nite, and VH1.
